Common Ground Publishing is seeking one full-time team member to work in our Publishing Department in Champaign, Illinois. Job Title: Community Editor

Summary: The Community Editor will primarily assist with journal production, handling submitted articles at every stage of the publication process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Experience with copyediting/proofreading
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to focus simultaneously on short- and long-term projects
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite; comprehensive knowledge of Word
  • Interest in academic publishing

Requirements:

Conference Producer

Common Ground Publishing is seeking one full-time team member to work in our Conference Department in Champaign, Illinois. The Conference Producer is responsible for all aspects of planning and executing conferences, including budget management and reporting, vendor procurement, promotion, and development of sponsorships and partnerships.  Within the Conference Department, Conference Producers also participate in department meetings, assume departmental-level duties, and collaborate with other Producers and staff from other departments to develop and manage the full range of knowledge communities under the Common Ground umbrella.

Common Ground Publishing organizes 24 academic conferences around the world and publishes interdisciplinary academic journals and books. The Conference Producer will work closely with the Director of Conferences, Communications Team, Accounts Team, and Advisory Board members.

• Develops, prioritizes, and implements plans for conference duties
• Negotiates contracts and maintains relationships with preferred vendors
• Compiles estimated cost models, submits preliminary and final budget, and prepares management reports
• Negotiate group travel and hotel contracts for event staffers and attendees to meet approved budget
• Assist with vendor payments in coordination with Accounts team
• Assists in creation of internal and external promotional pieces
• Coordinates on-site registration and payment procedures
• Solicits new sponsorship and partnership activities
• Organizes required catering services and AV equipment setup
• Manages on-site staffing and conference registration
• Determines appropriates responses to problems and emergencies
• Provides project status updates
• Other duties as assigned by the Director of Conferences

Requirements:
• Experience managing multi-faceted events
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to focus simultaneously on short- and long-term projects
• Domestic and International Travel
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite; comprehensive knowledge of Word and Excel
• Interest in academic events and planning

Common Ground Publishing Internships

Internships are offered at the start of each semester, but we accept applications year-round.

Marketing/ Communications Internship

Common Ground Publishing produces academic conferences, peer-reviewed journals and books, and innovative software. 

The conferencing department is looking for a reliable, energetic, internet-savvy and creative individual to join our team as a Marketing Intern.

Reporting to Director of Conference Development and Communications and Marketing Coordinator, the Marketing Intern will participate in the evaluation of the effectiveness of promotional activities and marketing campaigns. The intern will assist in analysis of website traffic, email communications, and resulting sales (conference registrations).

This is an unpaid position but provides great hands-on experience with a flexible work schedule. The position is eligible for course credit at the University of Illinois.

Position: Marketing Intern
Hours: 10-20/week (flexible schedule)

Requirements:

  • Interest in marketing, communication, or social media applications
  • Awareness of (or willingness to learn about) Google Analytics and/or other methods of tracking patterns of user interaction with websites and e-newsletters
  • Experience with Excel
  • Ability to organize and interpret data related to internet usage
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Public Relations/ Communications Internship

Common Ground Publishing produces academic conferences, peer-reviewed journals and books, and innovative software.

The conferencing department is looking for a reliable, energetic, internet-savvy and creative individual to join our team as a Public Relations Intern.

Reporting to Director of Conference Development and Communications and Marketing Coordinator, the Public Relations Intern will assist in creating written PR materials such as press releases, fact sheets, bios and copy for social media outlets, as well as assembling targeted media contact lists. The PR intern will also have the opportunity to actively liaise with media via telephone and email to “pitch” news stories and will assist in collating, analyzing and evaluating resulting media coverage.

This is an unpaid position but provides great hands-on experience with a flexible work schedule. The position is eligible for course credit at the University of Illinois.

Position: Public Relations Intern
Hours: 10-20/week (flexible schedule)

Requirements:

  • Interest in public relations, communication, and social media applications
  • Exceptional writing skills with experience or training in writing for media outlets
  • Experience with Word, Excel and Internet research
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Publishing Internship

Common Ground's publishing department seeks a junior or senior English or Creative Writing major to join our team as a Publishing Intern. This is an unpaid position that is eligible for course credit at the University of Illinois. This internship offers a chance to gain valuable publishing experience working with some of Common Ground's 77 academic journals and journal collections. The Publishing Intern will work closely with the Managing Editor and Community Editors.

Position:  Publishing Intern
Hours:  12-15/week

Responsibilities:

  • Correspond with academics and other publishing professionals
  • Review journal article submissions for clarity and adherence to our submission requirements
  • Assign peer referees to journal article submissions
  • Proofread and check reference lists
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Community Editors

Requirements:

  • Interest in Publishing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of various academic referencing styles, but primarily the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to focus simultaneously on short- and long-term projects
  • Experience with Excel and MS Word
  • Experience with copyediting/proofreading is a plus
