Bill Cope, Founder and President, Publishes New Book on Literacy Learning and Teaching

CGP Founder and President Bill Cope has published a new book on contemporary literacy learning and teaching with his longtime research partner, Mary Kalantzis, who serves as Dean of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Education.

Literacies (Cambridge UP, 2011) develops and extends the multiliteracies theory and practice for which Drs. Cope and Kalantzis have long been known. The book supplements traditional ideas of literacy in the singular—learning to read and write—by expanding the area of focus to cover ‘literacies’ in a broad sense (across cultures, subjects, and contexts) and in the plural, including the contemporary communications environments of the new media, the navigation of complex and diverse social spaces, and the updated pedagogies of literacy within their historical, educational contexts.

This latest work, when combined with Drs. Cope and Kalantzis’s earlier New Learning: Elements of a Science of Education (Cambridge UP, 2008), serves as an essential vision statement for the Scholar learning environment, which Common Ground Publishing is developing in collaboration with Dr. Cope’s research team at the University of Illinois. Scholar’s development, and associated education research, is supported by four grants awarded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences.
